Hair Loss

Healing Through the Hair

I have made it my mission to heal through the hair because I have seen so many cases of hair loss in my career experience.

Alopecia is a medical term for hair loss that affects many African Americans. There are various categories of alopecia and degrees of severity of the conditions. The two most common types are Alopecia Areata and Traction Alopecia. Alopecia Areata is premature hair loss that appears in a small round area on the scalp about the size of a silver dollar caused by an internal disorder or disease that is affected by the nervous and or immune system. Traction Alopecia is the second type, it is a self-induced and most likely permanent condition that is caused by the hair being pulled from the scalp from the improper use of weaves, glue, improperly applied braids, headscarves, and chemical use.

When Isis Brantley won the fight for the freedom to braid hair in Texas, she helped pave the way toward financial independence not only for herself, but for braiders, no longer constrained by regulations requiring cosmetology licensing. Her story is not just about braid freedom, but about financial freedom, a gift that she wants to share with others.
