This month through January the Isis Project is sponsoring a film by Dallas' own, Talibah L. Newman. The world of film is rapidly transforming through the lens of a young African American filmmaker who hails from Dallas, Texas--Talibah Lateefah Newman. Ms. Newman currently attends Columbia University’s MFA program for film directing. She is the eldest of five children and discovered her passion of filmmaking through writing short stories and shooting short films with her family at the tender age of 11. As the daughter of super artistic entrepreneurial parents, Cadino Newman and Isis Brantley and granddaughter of jazz legend David “Fathead” Newman Talibah has no choice but to express herself with the clairvoyant artistic vision that oozes out of her pores. She was born to create and born to tell compelling stories.
Talibah is currently in her final throws of graduate school and is currently raising finishing funds for her latest short Busted on Brigham Lane, which centers around the story of a teenage girl who takes precariously creative measures to reconcile her relationship with her estranged father for her 18th birthday only to discover that he is a different man than she remembers. The film stars Susan Heyward, and soon to be released Pariah’s rockstars Pernell Walker & Rob Morgan.
Ms. Newman’s additional projects include a feature Film Script: Special, The Joseph Mathews Story - the story of a young black teenage boy's rocky journey towards defining self worth as a black male through wrestling while battling a broken Oklahoma City school system and the temptations of the hood and a thesis film dealing with young black women and the demons of depression.
Please join us at the Angelika Theater in Dallas, Texas for a showcase of some of Talibah Newman’s work to honor her continued efforts as a provocative filmmaker of color and a Fundraiser to support what is hopefully to become a long lasting career in directing and writing.
